Vietnamese tourists' behavior on choosing destinations post Covid-19: Safety is one of the most important criteria.

Vietnamese tourists' behavior on choosing destinations after Covid-19: Safety is one of the most important criteria.

Until now, there have been lots of solutions for the tourism sector to bounce back, ranging from promotion to campaigns encouraging travel activities. Nevertheless, I believe that analyzing tourists’ behaviour as a way to build new strategies is crucial for a successful return of the tourism sector. Therefore, I would like to share with you some highlights of Vietnamese tourists' criteria on tourism choices these days, especially when Covid-19 cases are still recorded in some areas of Vietnam.

  • Shift from popular places to obscure ones: absence of Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Hanoi – Vietnam's three biggest urban tourism hubs (*)
  • Mountainous areas and exploring activities there are prefered such as Sapa, Dalat and Northern provinces (*)
  • In the 'new normal,' travelers rank cleanliness and hygiene among their top three considerations, well ahead of travel brand reputation or loyalty programs. (**)

Thanks, Chi. It is interesting as there are similar phenomenons in Central Europe: People are looking more for nature destinations, which is not really a big surpise as customes can expect there more space (=safety from CoVid19) and also chances to retreat from all the CoVid-stress... Opens chances, but also potential threats of overtourism... as we got that already last summer in Central Europe!

The rise of nature tourism, including recreation of local residents, is a remarkable change in behaviour due to pandemic. Here are some numbers from Finland, including the visitor numbers of last summer season.  Unfortunately the visitors leave more trash behind, and also the infrastructure such as fire places and paths should be maintained more often now.  I am pleased to say that the Finnish government has admitted extra funding for the Park and Wildlife for that work. In addition, visitors should be educated to behave properly!

Thanks, Leena. We observed this phenomenon also in the Austrian and German Alps which turned into overtourism hot spots. In the post of Oana, I mentioned a paper about the raising plastic pollution during CoVid19:

"COVID-19 pandemic is contributing to worldwide plastic pollution".  https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cej.2020.126683

I am fundamentally convinced that we are completely wrong in expecting customers "behaving well" in nature as kind and respectful people.
As I argued in my presentation at our last conference, according to brain theory-based behavior theory, people's behavior is not guided by education, but by frameworks, circumstances and especially, at the most, by peer groups: If their "influencer" bring waste back home, separating it, by presenting them as cool, while the judge nature contaminators as "stupid bastards", they might risk to loos some of their followers, but they could also have a good chance to initiate a different behavior...
Unfortunately, as long as we have also influencers such as Trump, we will be confronted with a wide veriety of behaviors...
