I really agree on

“We do need to crowd in private money, it is almost unthinkable to do this relying solely on grants.”

Thanks, Waruth. I agree a lot with you - for several reasons although I haven't reflected all of them still well:
Economy will go down a bit, while many customers, at least in Europe, have a lot of saved money as they haven't spent their money over the last year.
Additionally, there are no profits to be made at the banks.
So, investments by crowdfounding offers a chance for both sides.
Off course this is risky money. In times of change, everything could possible... (I will continue)

Cannot agree more, however, depending on what type of the crowd funding as well.

Donation and reward base will have slightly different impact from lending and equity base.

What do you think?

Well, thanks, Waruth, just to tell a story:
Last year we had a project to develop a super innovative photovoltaic plant at the University campus. It was technically designed by our own Facility Manager, but organized by our students. It was a pretty sustainable project during the last year. https://www.fh-joanneum.at/projekt/sonnenkollektiv/ sorry, in German, you have to translate - e.g. by deep l

More pictures at: https://project-milestones.at/index.php/10-photovoltaik/
Now the financial aspect: That plant was pretty expensive: around 15.000 Euro.
The University granted to cover the costs unter the condition of collecting money by crowd founding.
The big challenge: CoVid19 appeared...

Nevertheless the students made it to collect about 8.000 Euro from companies and private donors (on charity base). This was amazing.

Well, what was the main "emotional" idea behind:
Creating a kind of common feeling, fighting and working together for a better future in a critical time... So, it was very much emotionalized...

Lessons leaned: I am sure this could also be used for commercial purposes with a money-back-contract. I will show you some examples...

Examples for commercial crowd founding projects:
Unfortunately this is also in German, sorry, but really interesting:

https://www.crowd4climate.org/xcellent-pv This is a very interesting project in Thailand. I translate the text:

"This is the first project that ecoligo will implement in Thailand. The country is characterized by exemplary economic growth and the associated increase in demand for electricity, which ecoligo aims to meet with clean energy generation. After Vietnam, it is already the second country in Southeast Asia in which ecoligo will be active. Therefore, you have the unique opportunity to secure an interest bonus of 1.00 %. Simply invest in the project and benefit from a higher interest rate of 6.00 % instead of 5.00 % over the entire term."

"

Thanks to good crisis management and a high level of solidarity within society, the corona crisis in Thailand has been relatively mild so far. In the months since the outbreak of the pandemic, 3,700 infections have been registered in the country. In recent weeks, the number of new daily infections has been almost steadily below 10 (as of Oct. 21, 2020). Strong restrictions on entry for foreign tourists and strict quarantine rules remain in place. However, businesses and factories are open subject to certain regulations such as wearing respirators and maintaining a safe distance between employees.

In response to the Corona crisis, ecoligo has set up a guarantee fund to protect crowdinvestors from potential impacts. The fund is initially funded with €50,000 from ecoligo's own resources and is intended to secure the upcoming payments to crowdinvestors in the coming months and to last beyond the Corona crisis. Hereby ecoligo signals its sustainable commitment to the long-term goal of decarbonizing our planet. The challenges of the global climate crisis persist. The guarantee fund ensures that payments to crowdinvestors* will be made on time, regardless of the global economic situation or any delays in payment by the end customers. Learn more here.

The acquisition of this asset will refinance the rooftop solar system already installed and in operation, which is already generating savings for Xcellent's end customer in Thailand. With projects already in operation, potential risks in the procurement and installation process are eliminated. In addition, the end customer already has a payment history."
